Neuroscience Photography Contest
FENS Regional Meeting 2023 Neuroscience Photography Contest
The FENS Regional Meeting 2023 Neuroscience Photography Contest is an opportunity for the academic and scientific communities to display neuroscience-related images in the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve in the context of the FENS Regional Meeting 2023.
Objectives and Theme
The contest aims to promote and disseminate stories, or scientific phenomena that highlight any aspect of neuroscience including research or clinical practice, using photography as a means of expressing and combining aesthetics with scientific rigor.
Sponsors
The sponsor of the contest is the Portuguese Neuroscience Society (SPN).
Eligibility
The competition is open to the University community, including all faculty, staff, students, researchers, post-docs, and alumni. The participation is free.
Deadline
The deadline for submitting your image(s) is January 31, 2023.
Image Criteria
Images should capture the beauty of neuroscience. Creativity in both images and titles is encouraged.
Image Submissions
Up to three (3) photographs per contestant will be accepted, however, only one entry per contestant can be selected as a First, Second, or Third Place Winner. An individual submission must be completed with the name and address to identify the single contestant submitting the photographs.
Photographs must be digital, and all images must be in JPEG, JPG, or TIFF format. Applicants should have high-resolution files (400 dpi) available for any image submitted – something that could be printed on a large poster. We will reach out to the applicants to collect the printed images as needed.
Each submission should include a written statement describing what the image is, how the image was created, and how the image relates to neuroscience, of no more than 300 words. All images must be submitted by the photographer/creator to the email: outreach@fensrm2023algarve.pt. If featuring a person, please obtain written consent from the individual or their next of kin.
Images submitted should be recent ones (acquired within the past three years) and should not have won any previous awards or been featured on the cover of a magazine or scientific journal.
The photograph must be the original work of the contest entrant and must not contain material that violates or infringes another’s rights to privacy, trademarks, or intellectual property rights, or that constitutes copyright infringement.
The organisation reserve the right to examine the original photograph/source material to confirm compliance with these rules. The organisation is entitled not to accept works that it considers to be out of context, the form of which is not properly completed, or whose format does not comply with the technical specifications.
Awards
Prizes will be awarded to one First Place Winner, one Second Place Winner, and one Third Place Winner. The First, Second and Third Place Winners will have their winning photo featured on FENS Regional meeting 2023 website. All winners will also receive free registration for the FENS Regional meeting 2023.
FENS Regional 2023 meeting plans to hold an exhibition of the selected entries at the Centro Ciência Viva do Algarve in Faro during May 2023 (up to 40 images), and again at the University of Algarve (date under confirmation).
Intellectual Property Rights
Each entrant will retain ownership of all intellectual property rights in the entry. However, by entering the contest, entrants grant to the Portuguese Neuroscience Society a non-exclusive, perpetual, worldwide, royalty-free license to exhibit the images; to use the images in its program marketing materials; and to modify the images, but only to the extent required to fit the format for web pages and marketing materials. A credit line naming the applicant would be included as prominently and close to the image as the display medium allows. The images will not be commercially exploited, and all commercial rights remain with entrants.
Evaluation
The evaluation will be conducted by the FENS Regional 2023 meeting organising committee. The panel will select one First Place Winner, one Second Place Winner, and one Third Place Winner. The selection will be based on the following judging criteria: extent to which the photograph captures the essence of the contest theme (50%); creativity (25%); and composition, clarity, and technical quality (25%). Winners will be notified by February 15, 2023. The decision is final
Errors and omissions
Errors, omitted cases, or other issues that give you questions inherent in this Regulation, or the Contest, must be submitted via e-mail, and will be reviewed and decided by the organisation.
